Frequently asked questions

Everything about what Persephone is, what she does and how she works.

What Persephone is

+What is Persephone?

Persephone is a sewing pattern engine and sewing journal. You give her a picture, a sketch or a written description of a garment, and she turns it into sewing pattern pieces made to your measurements.

+Who is Persephone for?

Anyone who wants to make their own clothes: complete beginners who have no clue where to begin, home sewists, hobbyists and upcoming fashion brands who want to turn ideas into real pieces.

+Do I need sewing or pattern-drafting experience?

No. Persephone explains each piece, how it joins to its neighbours and the order to sew it in. The sewing guide and Ask Persephone help with anything you're unsure about.

+What kinds of garments can she make patterns for?

Tops, corsets, dresses, skirts, trousers, shirts, lingerie, sets and more. She also handles non-wearable makes, like bottle covers, using their own object shapes.

+Is it only for women's clothing?

No. Persephone works with any body form: women, men, children and even pets. She reads who the garment is for from your picture or description.

How she works

+What can I upload?

A garment photo, a screenshot from your inspo board, a hand sketch, an existing pattern piece or a full pattern sheet.

+Can I just type what I want to make?

Yes. Persephone also takes typed or written descriptions, such as “cropped corset top with lace-up back”. You can use a picture, words, or both together for the best result.

+What happens after I upload?

Persephone illustrates the garment from the front and back, works out how the fabric shapes it, divides it into fabric pieces, maps which edges sew together, checks that everything lines up, then lets you size, grade and print the pattern.

+What are the front and back illustrations for?

They show how Persephone understood your garment before any pattern is made. If something looks off, you can redraw a view with a written instruction, like “lengthen the hem 5cm”.

+What if the pieces don't line up?

Persephone checks every seam. If a join doesn't match, she tells you in plain words and can resolve details automatically, or you can correct it yourself. Printing stays closed until the pieces sew back into the garment.

+Can I skip the checks and move on?

Once you're happy with the illustrations, you can continue to grading. The readable summary lets you skim or skip the pass/fail details.

+Can I edit the pattern myself?

Yes. You can adjust seam lines, notch placements and individual pieces, and redraw any single piece with a written instruction.

+Does she keep my original picture?

Yes. Your reference stays with the project so you can always compare the pattern to what inspired it.

Sizing and fit

+How does sizing work?

Pick a size from the size chart, or enter your own measurements. Persephone grades every piece, seam allowance and cut quantity to that size.

+Can I use my exact measurements?

Yes. Save your measurements as a fit profile, reuse it across projects and set it as your default.

+Inches or centimetres?

Either. Choose Imperial (Letter paper) or Metric (A4 paper) and Persephone shows measurements your way.

Printing and sewing

+How do I get my pattern?

Download it as a tiled PDF you print at home and tape together, an A0 PDF for a print shop, or an SVG file.

+Does she help me sew it?

Yes. Each pattern comes with a step-by-step sewing order, materials and notions, and piece-by-piece joining details.

+Where do I buy supplies?

Members can use the supplies finder to look for affordable sewing supplies near them, plus tips on improvising when you don't have the exact materials.

Pricing and access

+How much does Persephone cost?

Lifetime access is a one-time $17 payment. There is no subscription.

+Is there a free pattern?

When you create an account you can choose one starter pattern, from the digital closet or the garment gallery.

+What is a Pattern Pass?

If you'd rather pay as you go, a Pattern Pass is $1 per pattern. Once paid, you can download that pattern for life.

+Can my Pattern Passes count toward lifetime access?

Yes, if you choose. At checkout you can tick a box to apply your pass credit to the $17 lifetime price. It's never applied automatically.

+What does lifetime access include?

Unlimited patterns, plus the Members' Corner: Ask Persephone, the supplies finder, your private sewing journal with Dear Persephone scrapbook chapters, and @handle messages with other members.

+What is your refund policy?

Please read the refund policy for full details. Partial refunds aren't offered, and a refund removes the access it paid for.

Account and community

+Do I need an account?

You can explore without one. An account is needed to claim your starter pattern, buy access and keep your projects safe across devices.

+Where are my patterns saved?

On your device, with a copy kept in your account when you're signed in, so they're there on any device.

+What is the sewing journal?

A private place to record projects with writing, photos, fabric and cost notes. Dear Persephone chapters let you type or handwrite entries and decorate them with sewing stickers.

+Can I talk to other Persephone users?

Members can message each other in the app using @handles. Your email address stays private.

+Can I put Persephone on my phone?

Yes. Open the site in your browser and choose “Add to Home Screen” to use it like an app.
